Working From Home
One of the things I like best about working on the Net is that my commute time is about 30 seconds. That’s how long it takes me to get from my coffee pot to my computer (Hunter)! Well, there are other things I have to do but I do them all here. Right here in my HOME!!
My wife Kate is a Social Worker with the Developmentally Disabled. After she leaves, a little before 9:00 AM, the dogs; Merle’n, Mystic, Indigo and Scout and I start our day. Which means the breakfast ritual for them and then (and only then) a second cup of coffee for me.
Life with four dogs is never boring. The breakfast ritual is a good example. Ever since the dog food contamination last year, I have made their food for them. Not each and every day but once every three days. Still it can be a bother; cooking up rice, three kinds of veggies, a couple pounds of ground turkey and a little vegetable oil. It’s alright if I’ve kept up and made the new batch the night before. If I haven’t (which happens a lot) and they have to wait for their breakfast. Well, let’s just say they grumble about it for the rest of the day.
Once they’re fed and laying about in the back yard. I start my commute. I usually don’t bother getting dressed for work. I don’t have to. I just grab my second cup and make my way through the dog toys to my office. I check my e-mails to see what Michael and Terry want me to expound on, decide what is the priority and then we’re off and running!
Today they had a number of subjects for me, which is always inspiring. We’re just kicking off this new site and Terry is starting some serious advertising to the blog. So Michael drops in a veiled threat about his writing a piece for the blog. He knows how to light a fire under my butt. Michael is a very talented individual he handles all our company’s business and barely gets winded. However, Michael is not a **Writer**, and he knows I am very possessive about the blog. So when he feels the need to drive the spurs into my side he casually suggests that he should help out and it works every time.
Any hoo, I obviously picked the Working From Home, topic which is a favorite argument of mine. I think that if you can perform your job’s duties at a computer in the comfort of your home you should not only be allowed to do it. You should be encouraged to do it! The technology’s available, the demand is high, and it’s only logical that it would benefit both employer and employee. Not to mention our environment.
I know that worker productivity will be increased and family life will benefit also. When you don’t have to add an extra hour or four of commuting to your day you’ll have more time for your family and you’ll be more relaxed and ready to apply yourself to your job. If you get sick, it’s possible that you can still take care of those important issues and not infect the rest of the office. If the kids get sick you don’t have to take off work either.
There are distractions but we are all adults and I’m sure we can handle them and ‘get it done’ at the same time.
Obviously everyone can’t work out of their home. Cable installers work in other people’s homes and so do Home Healthcare workers. However, anyone who works with data; words, numbers, graphics etc and does it on a computer should be required to do it at home! Think about all of the oil we’d save and pollution we’d do away with!
I know that I love working out of my home! It has given me a whole new perspective on life. You know what? You too can work out of your home. If you have a computer at home, there are a lot of ways to make money on the internet. And, the easiest way?
